You will start your Walk & Coach Camino tour in the lively city of León.  A must see while in the city is the beautiful Catedral de Léon with its Gothic style towers and flying butresses and is located in the heart of the city.  We have booked the group in a hotel in the historic centre of Léon for the first night.  You will get a chance to meet and get to know the group and guide at 7pm for a quick tour briefing while also enjoying your first dinner together as a group.

2 León to Ponferrada - 6km

French Way - Walk & Coach - Ponferrada - Caminoways.com

6km Walk – 1h30: The day will start with a visit to León Cathedral and will then be followed by a short transfer to Astorga.  Here the group will have lunch.  In the afternoon, you will visit Astorga’s renowned ‘pink’ cathedral.  You will then be driven up to the Mountains of León and get the chance to walk from Rabanal del Camino to the hamlet of Foncebadón which is the site of an old pilgrim’s hospital; and then finally to the famous Cruz de Ferro (Iron Cross) at 1504m, the highest point on the Camino Francés and a very special stopping point for pilgrims. The group will then be bus transferred further on to Ponferrada, where you will stay for the night.

3 Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo - 9km

frenchway-caminoways-Villafranca-Bierzo

9km Walk – 2h: Enjoy an early morning tour of Ponferrada where you will see the stunning 13th Century Templars Castle looming over the river. Explore the remarkable 16th century Basílica de Nuestra Senora de la Encina.  After the morning adventure we will break for lunch, before travelling the short journey to the village of Cacabelos.  Cacabelos is located in the picturesque Bierzo valley and while walking to the lovely village of Villafranca you will get to see the mountains of Dos Ancares in the distance, enjoy the fresh air and witness nature in the Spanish countryside.  Stay tonight in the charming little village of Villafranca, with its several beautiful churches and a rich history that dates back to the Neolithic age.

4 Villafranca, O Cebreiro, Samos, Sarria - 8km

French-Way-o-cebreiro-caminoways.com

8km Walk – 1h45: A short transfer will take the group to the picturesque mountain village of O Cebreiro with its ancient thatched stone cottages (known as ‘pallozas’). In this unique remote mountain village, you will get some of the nicest views the Camino has to offer. The local church contains the relics of a virgin saint, and bears witness to a 16th century miracle.  You will be walking the Camino from O Cebreiro, enjoying incredible views. The group will stop for lunch in Samos and will have the opportunity to relax after this before a short transfer to Sarria and an overnight stay in the town.

5 Sarria to Melide - 8km

frenchway-caminoways-sarria

8km Walk- 2h: After a leisurely breakfast the group will set off from the hotel to walk a stretch of the Camino. Sarria is the most popular starting point for Camino pilgrims and you will be joining them for 8kms walking to the village of Ferreiros. You will start with an easy ascent to a view point over Sarria and then down into the woods following what Galicians call ‘corredoiras’, forest trails used by pilgrims and locals, through oak woods, which common in Galicia.  After the walk, you will get a short transfer to Portomarin, where the group will have lunch. This village was moved, back in 1962 after the construction of a new dam and relics of this can be seen today when the water level is low.  In the afternoon, we have scheduled a short tour of the village to learn more about its interesting unique history. After this tour you will be transferred to the market town of Melide where you will visit the church of San Pedro and see its famous murals dating back to the 15 th century. It is here in Melide where you will stay tonight.
