Why book early for Holy Year 2027?

2027 is a Holy Year (Xacobeo), because the feast of Saint James on 25th July falls on a Sunday. The Holy Door of Santiago Cathedral opens on the evening of 31st December 2026 and stays open throughout 2027. The Camino was already breaking records before the Holy Year. According to the Pilgrim’s Office in Santiago, more than 530,000 pilgrims received their Compostela in 2025, the highest figure ever. Numbers are expected to be even higher in 2027, so availability will be limited, especially in small villages along the final 100 km.

How to book your Holy Year Camino in 5 steps

1. Choose your route

Your route will shape your whole experience. Compare the options in our Camino de Santiago routes guide. The most popular Holy Year routes are:

• Camino Francés: the classic route, lively and sociable. Most pilgrims walk the last 100 km from Sarria to Santiago. If you have more time, you can walk the full Camino Francés from Saint Jean.
• Camino Portugués: follow the Camino Portugués Coastal for sea views, or the Camino Portugués Central for historic towns. Popular starting points include Porto on the Coastal route and Tui for the last 100 km of the Central route.
• Camino Espiritual: a reflective variant with a boat journey along the Ría de Arousa, which makes it especially meaningful in a Holy Year.

If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds, consider the coastal Camino del Norte, the mountainous Camino Primitivo, the short Camino Inglés or the lesser-known Camino de Invierno.

2. Pick your dates

The Holy Door is open all year, so you don’t need to arrive on 25th July. For the best balance of weather and crowds:

• April to June: mild temperatures and green landscapes
• September to October: warm days and fewer pilgrims after mid September
• July and August: the busiest months, especially around the St James’ Festival in Santiago
