What Is the Camino de Santiago?

The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St James) is a network of ancient pilgrim routes that all lead to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in north-west Spain. People have walked it for over 1,000 years.

Today, people of all ages walk or cycle the Camino for the scenery, the food, the history, the friends they make along the way, or for spiritual reasons. You don’t need to be religious or very fit.

The best-known routes are the Camino Francés, the Camino Portugués and the Camino Finisterre, which continues from Santiago to the Atlantic coast. There are many more, from France to the Via Francigena to Rome. You can walk or cycle the Camino, on your own or with a guided tour.

Many people walk just the last 100 km, about a week, which earns you the Compostela certificate. Others spend five weeks walking the full route from the French Pyrenees.

Getting there is easy: most travellers fly into Santiago, Porto, Madrid or Bilbao. See which airport is best for your Camino.
