A Glass of Queimada to Keep the Evil Spirits Away
If you are in Galicia, any gathering is a good occasion and excuse to light a ‘queimada’, but magic nights such as Midsummer and Halloween are just the absolute best time to drink this magic potion.
Some think queimada is a Celtic tradition, while others claim it is a modern invention. Despite its obscure origins, ancient or recent, queimada is much loved across Galicia today, where superstition and celebration are important ingredients in equal measure.
The queimada drink is made with augardente (firewater, a spirit made from the vine), lemon peel, coffee beans, sugar and cinnamon sticks. The concoction is set alight so the alcohol burns slowly. While it burns, a ‘conxuro’ or spell must be read aloud to make sure the queimada has the desired effect: keeping evil spirits away for the rest of the year.
Here’s a transcript of the ‘conxuro’, which ‘conjures’ all evil, dark and mean-spirited creatures so they can burn in the queimada mix… by the time the fire is out and the spell is finished, we’ll be free of negative spirits. Wishing you all a happy Halloween!

Demos, trasgos e diaños,
espíritos das neboadas veigas.
Corvos, píntegas e meigas:
feitizos das menciñeiras.
Podres cañotas furadas,
fogar dos vermes e alimañas.
Lume das Santas Compañas,
mal de ollo, negros meigallos,
cheiro dos mortos, tronos e raios.
Ouveo do can, pregón da morte;
fociño do sátiro e pé do coello.
Pecadora lingua da mala muller
casada cun home vello.
Averno de Satán e Belcebú,
lume dos cadáveres ardentes,
corpos mutilados dos indecentes,
peidos dos infernais cus,
muxido da mar embravecida.
Barriga inútil da muller solteira,
falar dos gatos que andan á xaneira,
guedella porca da cabra mal parida.
Con este fol levantarei
as chamas deste lume
que asemella ao do Inferno,
e fuxirán as bruxas
da cabalo das súas vasoiras,
índose bañar na praia
das areas gordas.
Oíde, oíde os ruxidos
que dan as que non poden
deixar de queimarse na augardente
quedando así purificadas.
E cando esta beberaxe
baixe polas nosas gorxas,
quedaremos libres dos males
da nosa alma e de todo embruxamento.
Forzas do ar, terra, mar e lume,
a vós fago esta chamada:
se é verdade que tendes máis poder
que a humana xente,
eiquí e agora, facede que os espíritos
dos amigos que están fóra,
participen con nós desta queimada.
