THE CAWLEY CAMINO
Each year Phil Cawley of Today FM fame offers listeners the chance to take off on an amazing adventure walking the Camino de Santiago.
The Cawley Camino team of intrepid walkers follow in the footsteps of Irish medieval pilgrims as they make their way to wonderful Santiago de Compostela and its famous cathedral, in Galicia.
CAWLEY CAMINO 2018
Since that first trek in 2015, the Cawley Camino has become an annual adventure for Today FM’s most intrepid listeners.
Phil and the team have tackled different Camino routes since: They’ve walked the famous Camino Frances from Sarria, the pilgrims’ favourite starting point; the Camino Portugues from Tui along vineyards and hamlets; and the Camino Ingles from Ferrol, the classic route taken by Irish medieval pilgrims.
This year, Phil is setting the ultimate challenge: not one for three Camino adventures!
Listeners can join this amazing walk and raise funds for Irish Hospice Foundation.
Fascinating medieval towns, a feast of Italian food to indulge in and picturesque scenery are some of the delights the team will enjoy in this trail.
“This is a first for me. Ever since I saw the opening in “Quantum of Solace” my inner boy had to visit. Yes it is true they race horses around the town square. For the romantic among you we will get to see the ancient skyscrapers that inspired Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. I’ve been reading up on some of the scenery and the Tuscan landscape is almost as breathtaking as the food…Please don’t mention the Truffles. This will be a trip of discovery for all and I can wait…” – Phil Cawley.
On SEPTEMBER 6th, the Cawley Camino crew will tackle the Portuguese Coastal Camino.
The Cawley Camino team of intrepid pilgrims will be heading to Vigo, in the Rias Baixas of Galicia, famous for its white wine and delicious seafood. Fantastic views of Vigo Bay will kick start the adventure before taking to the vineyard-lined country tracks of Southern Galicia.
The chosen charity for this year’s trip is Pieta House.
“At this stage I have completed quite a few Camino treks but have yet to take the most scenic of detours via the coastal route to Santiago. A few of last years walkers did this one and recommended I go for it. We will start in Vigo where i visited on my bike last year. Lets just say the Tapas in this town is well worth the walk. Pontevedra is another great Spanish town to experience Spanish hospitality on out way to Santiago. I’m planning an extra night in Santiago at the end to allow for a trip to Finisterre (end of the world) or a Tapas tour. I’m also on the hunt for a bar to do my famous “Disco Trek” on one of the nights. Hope you can make it on September 6th.” – Phil Cawley.
On 11th OCTOBER, a second Cawley Camino trip will take walkers to the most famous Camino route: the Camino Frances, to walk the last stretch from Sarria. Along the way the group will meet fellow pilgrims from all over the world, as they walk Galicia’s green and lush countryside and enjoy the fun atmosphere of the Camino classic trail.
“I was sad to see so many missed out on last years trip as it filled so fast. This year I’m gonna make sure nobody gets left out so I’m planning to Over flow Camino on October 11th. Yes I’m making a return visit to the most popular walk on the Camino. We will kick off in the small town of Sarria. The route is full of great little bars and rest spots to stop off and have a foot rub. I’ll be sourcing a bar also for “Disco night” and have a Tapas tour on offer at the end also. Hope to see you on October 11th.” – Phil Cawley.
Once the Cawley Camino walkers arrive in historic Santiago de Compostela to collect their well deserved Pilgrim certificate they will spend an additional night in the city to have a chance to explore this lively and unique city and UNESCO listed Old Town. The famous Cawley Disco Night will also be back on the Camino this year.
