2027 is the next Camino de Santiago Holy Year — the Ano Xacobeo. It occurs because July 25th, the Feast of Saint James, falls on a Sunday. The Holy Door of Santiago Cathedral opens for the full year, a plenary indulgence becomes available and pilgrim numbers are expected to break all previous records. What is Camino Holy Year?

The Camino de Santiago has a Holy Year — known in Galician as the Ano Xacobeo — whenever the Feast of Saint James (July 25th) falls on a Sunday. Because of the way leap years work, Holy Years follow an irregular cycle of 6, 5, 6 and 11 years, meaning they occur roughly 14 times per century. To understand the full story behind this ancient pilgrimage, see our history of the Camino de Santiago.

The last Holy Year was 2021, extended into 2022 by Pope Francis due to the pandemic — the first time in history a Jacobean Year spanned two calendar years. After 2027, the next Holy Years will be 2032, 2038 and 2049. According to the Pilgrim Office of Santiago de Compostela, 530,919 Compostelas were issued in 2025 alone — a record for a non-Holy Year. 2027 is therefore a genuinely rare event. If you miss it, the next opportunity is five years away.

What Makes the 2027 Holy Year Special?

Two things define a Holy Year on the Camino de Santiago:

  • The Holy Door opens. The Porta Santa — the Holy Door of Santiago Cathedral, located on the Praza da Quintana — is sealed shut in every ordinary year. On December 31st, 2026, the Archbishop of Santiago will open it in a ceremonial rite, and it will remain open for the entirety of 2027. Pilgrims who enter the cathedral through this door are following a tradition that connects them to every pilgrim who has done the same across a thousand years of pilgrimage.
  • A plenary indulgence is available. Since the 12th century, pilgrims who visit the shrine during a Holy Year can receive a plenary indulgence — a full forgiveness of sins in the Catholic tradition. To qualify, pilgrims must visit the cathedral, pray, attend Mass, and have gone to Confession within 15 days before or after their visit. The plenary indulgence is one of the oldest traditions of the Camino and draws Catholic pilgrims from across the world.

Even for non-religious walkers, the Holy Year transforms the atmosphere on the Camino entirely — more pilgrims, more cultural events, a stronger sense of shared purpose, and an energy that ordinary years simply cannot replicate.

What to Expect on the Camino in 2027

  • More pilgrims than ever. In 2025, the Pilgrim Office issued 530,919 Compostelas — the highest figure ever recorded in a non-Holy Year. Holy Years drive significantly higher numbers on top of an already record-breaking baseline. Demand in 2027 is expected to exceed anything previously seen on the Camino.
  • A full calendar of events. Santiago de Compostela and Galicia prepare extensively for Holy Years — concerts, exhibitions, cultural festivals and religious celebrations fill the calendar throughout 2027. The official cultural programme is being coordinated by the Xunta de Galicia Xacobeo. The atmosphere in Santiago, particularly around the St James’ Day celebrations on July 25th, is extraordinary.
  • Higher demand for accommodation. The most popular stages on the Camino Francés and Camino Portugués fill up months in advance during Holy Years, particularly in summer. See our full guide to Camino de Santiago accommodation and book as early as possible.
  • Improved infrastructure. Galicia and the regional government invest heavily in the Camino ahead of Holy Years — restored paths, improved signage, expanded services. The 2027 Xacobeo has been declared an Event of Exceptional Public Interest by the Spanish government.

When to Walk the Camino in Holy Year 2027

  • The Holy Door is open for the entire calendar year — from January 1st to December 31st, 2027. You do not need to arrive on July 25th to walk through it or to receive the plenary indulgence. For a full month-by-month breakdown see our guide to the best time to walk the Camino de Santiago.
  • Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer the best balance of mild weather, manageable crowds and availability. These are the recommended windows for most pilgrims in 2027.
  • July and August will be the busiest months by far — peak season compounded by Holy Year demand. Accommodation will be scarce and expensive. Only book summer 2027 if you are comfortable with busy trails and have reserved well in advance.
  • January–March and November–December offer the quietest experience of the Holy Year, with the added benefit of walking through the Holy Door with far fewer fellow pilgrims.

How Far in Advance Should You Book for 2027?

Now. The most popular routes and departure dates for 2027 are already filling up. Based on previous Holy Years, accommodation on the Camino Francés from Sarria and the Camino Portugués from Vigo will be extremely limited by early 2027, particularly for spring and summer departures.

FAQs

What is the Camino Holy Year 2027?

The Camino Holy Year 2027 — also known as the Ano Xacobeo or Jacobean Year — occurs because July 25th, 2027, the Feast of Saint James, falls on a Sunday. The Holy Door of Santiago Cathedral opens for the full year, a plenary indulgence is available to Catholic pilgrims, and pilgrim numbers are expected to reach record levels. After 2027, the next Holy Years are 2032, 2038 and 2049.

What is the Holy Door of Santiago Cathedral?

The Holy Door — or Porta Santa — is a special entrance to Santiago Cathedral located on the Praza da Quintana. It is sealed shut in every ordinary year and only opens during a Holy Year. The Archbishop of Santiago opens it ceremonially on December 31st of the preceding year. In 2027, it will be open from January 1st to December 31st. Entering through the Holy Door is one of the most symbolic moments of any Camino pilgrimage.

What is the plenary indulgence on the Camino?

A plenary indulgence is a full forgiveness of sins in the Catholic tradition, available to pilgrims who walk the Camino during a Holy Year. To receive it, pilgrims must visit Santiago Cathedral, pray, attend Mass and have gone to Confession within 15 days before or after their visit. It has been granted to pilgrims on the Camino since the 12th century.

Do I need to be religious to walk the Camino in a Holy Year?

No. The Camino is open to everyone regardless of faith or motivation. The plenary indulgence is available to those who seek it under the Catholic Church’s conditions, but the route itself — and the Holy Door — welcomes all pilgrims. Many walkers in Holy Years are not religious but are drawn by the exceptional atmosphere, the cultural events and the shared sense of occasion.

How much busier will the Camino be in 2027?

Significantly busier than a normal year. In 2025, a non-Holy Year, the Pilgrim Office issued 530,919 Compostelas — a record. Holy Years drive a strong additional wave of demand on top of an already high baseline. 2027 is expected to be the busiest year in the history of the Camino. Booking early and choosing spring or autumn departures is strongly recommended.

Which is the best Camino route for Holy Year 2027?

The Camino Francés from Sarria offers the fullest Holy Year atmosphere. The Camino Portugués Coastal from Vigo is the best option for those who want the Holy Year experience with fewer crowds. The Camino del Norte and Camino Inglés from Ferrol are ideal for experienced walkers seeking a quieter Holy Year experience.

How far in advance should I book for the 2027 Holy Year?

As early as possible. Accommodation on the most popular routes and dates is already being reserved for 2027. We recommend booking at least 12 months in advance for summer departures and 6–9 months for spring and autumn. Use our Camino Planner to check current availability.

Does walking the Camino in Holy Year 2027 count towards the Compostela?

Yes. The Compostela certificate is awarded to pilgrims who walk at least the last 100km to Santiago in any year — Holy Year or not. Walking in 2027 does not change the requirements for the Compostela but does give you access to the Holy Door and the plenary indulgence.
