The romantic capital of Italy is home to some of the world’s most treasured buildings, artefacts and historic sites. Rome is one of the world’s most visited cities and it is not hard to see why. In every direction you will find something to do, see and taste. As the finishing point of the Via Francigena and the Saint Francis Way we always recommend spending an extra day or two to explore this beautiful city at the end of your trip.

Top attractions in Rome

When you arrive get yourself a map of Rome where all of the city centre attractions and landmarks are Rome-Via-Francigena-Italy-holy-yearhighlighted. Some of the most famous attractions include:

St.Peter’s Bascilica: This is the world’s most famous example of renaissance architecture and regarded as one of the largest churches in the world. As the finishing point for your walk where you will collect your pilgrim certificate it is the perfect opportunity to do a tour of the basilica.

The Vatican museums: Art collections spanning over 500 years, renaissance sculptures, a collection of portraits and the historical museum are just some of the unique things to see in the Vatican museums.

The Colosseum: This gigantic amphitheatre is over 2,000 years old. In ancient Rome it was used for gladiator games and was the most popular place for public entertainment. You can easily access the Colosseum today with a tourist pass and it is perfectly located in the centre of the city.

The Sistine Chapel: The official residence of the Pope is known throughout the world for it’s beautiful frescos including Michelangelo’s famous ceiling also known as Rome-Via-Francigenathe Last Judgement.

Centro Storico: Enjoy walking around the historic center of Rome where many of the cities attractions are located. This includes the impressive Baroque art at Piazza Navona and the enormous Pantheon temple.

Trevi Fountain: This is the largest baroque fountain in Rome. The construction was completed in 1762.  Tourists throw coins in the famous fountain for good luck and it is a great place to take a picture.

Spanish Steps: These iconic steps have been featured in Hollywood blockbuster movies such as ‘Roman Holiday’ and ‘The Talented Mr.Ripley’.

Food in Rome

Pizza and pasta are a must and can be found on every street corner. Some tasty food treasures in Rome include the Pizza Roman, Fritti (deep fried delicious rice balls), Zucchini flowers (also known as Fiori di Zucca) and the Barrala fish dish.

How to get around Rome

It is easy to explore the city centre and some of the major sites by foot but there is so much to see and do that you may tire yourself out. You can opt to use the Metro which operates from 5:30am – 11:30pm. The Colosseum has a specific metro stop and so does the Vatican. Buses and trams are also frequently used but you could get stuck in traffic. At Stazione Termini you can buy bus passes and special tourist tickets.
