The Enduring Magic of the Camino de Santiago
The Camino de Santiago is one of those rare wonders that stays with you long after you’ve experienced it. Many pilgrims share their stories of amazing adventures with anyone who will listen, and we’re always happy to hear them. On a recent journey to the airport, my taxi driver, unaware of where I worked, began to tell me about his Camino adventure. He had walked the Camino del Norte with two friends. While he spoke of the physical challenges, he enthusiastically shared how the views and sense of accomplishment made it all worthwhile.
A Journey to Remember
He showed me photos and two magnets he was planning to give to friends, offering a glimpse into the incredible experience he had. When I mentioned where I worked, we spent the rest of the journey discussing the Camino. It’s no surprise to hear people describe the pilgrimage as life-changing, regardless of their religious beliefs (this man wasn’t religious). I could feel his joy as he spoke of the great memories. He’s already planning his next Camino!
Over the years, many pilgrims have fulfilled their dream of walking the Camino with the help of CaminoWays. We’ve gathered feedback from past travellers and want to share their experiences with future Camino adventurers. Here’s what pilgrims have said about various aspects of the Camino, including fitness levels, group dynamics, and the joys of solo travel.
Camino Pilgrims Share Their Group Experiences
Walking as a Group
“Walking this was harder than I anticipated, but after the first two days, it seemed to get easier. It was great to cover the trail with a group – while we did not walk together, we met for breakfast and dinner. The trip brought complete strangers together as friends, supporting each other. I am proud of my accomplishment in completing what I set out to do.” – Mary, USA.
“We had 22 people in our group, 14 adults and 8 older teens/young adults. The walk was an incredible experience and we were all moved by it. Very safe and well-marked, we felt comfortable letting the kids go ahead, meeting up at the end of the day. A trip we will never forget.” – Lorena, USA.
Organised and Supported Journeys
“From the pickup at Santiago airport to Ferrol, each stage was managed by CaminoWays, including luggage transfers, hotels, and meals. All we had to do was walk and enjoy the Camino’s wonderful experience, its people, customs, and scenery. The journey tested our resilience but was well worth it. We rarely saw anyone on the trail, perhaps only 12 walkers in six days. The maps were very useful and we only strayed once, captivated by a church, but a local soon put us back on track.” – Robert, UK.
Guided Tours for a Unique Experience
“I recently returned from a holiday in Spain and Portugal, with the highlight being a guided walk on the last 100km of the Via de la Plata. Eight hiking friends and I signed up with CaminoWays, and it was a journey I’ll treasure forever. Our guide, Lago, was amazing, offering cultural insights and encouragement when needed. His pride in Galicia made him the perfect host. Special appreciation goes to the excellent welcoming and farewell dinners, which added to my appreciation of Spanish – sorry, Galician! – cooking.” – Chris, Canada.
Camino Pilgrims on Fitness and Challenges
Fitness Requirements for the Camino
“A moderate to challenging walk through the stunning Tuscan countryside from medieval walled city to walled city along the Via Francigena. We had heard that the trail wasn’t as well-marked as the Camino, but were pleased to find it was actually very clear.” – Marsha, USA.
“The first four days of this leg were tough, as temperatures reached 36°C, and finding shade in the open countryside was difficult. We struggled to find water along some parts of the route, especially between San Miniato and Gambassi Terme, where we were lucky to discover a water pump behind an old church. A more robust footwear choice might be advisable, especially if caught in a thunderstorm.” – Paul, Ireland.
Camino Pilgrims on Walking Experience
Walking the Camino with Ease
“We’ve just returned from a 7-day Walk and Coach Tour on the French Way. Every part of the trip exceeded our expectations – the quality of the hotels, food, walking experiences, and excursions. I’d recommend this trip to anyone who wants to experience El Camino but may lack the fitness or confidence for a full walk. Our guide, David, was personable and knowledgeable, adjusting the walks to match our abilities. We were able to walk between 2 and 4 hours each day, through varying landscapes from mountains to forests.” – Davie, UK.
Group Dynamics on the Camino
“My husband and I recently walked from Sarria to Santiago with a CaminoWays group. It was one of the most enjoyable experiences of our lives. We had a fantastic group of 12 from all over the world, and our guide, Manuel, was helpful and witty. The weather was perfect, and this trip is a must for walking enthusiasts. We’ve already decided to walk the Portuguese Coastal route next year.” – Margaret, Ireland.
