COVID-19 Travel News
Travel Within The European Union
EU citizens and residents can travel restriction-free to all Camino destinations with the EU Digital Covid Certificate. The certificate is available free of charge and is digital proof that a person has either:
- been vaccinated against COVID-19
- received a negative test result or
- recovered from COVID-19
The EU digital certificates are valid for nine months following the completion of primary vaccine doses. There is no time limit for digital certificates showing a booster dose. For more information, click here. The digital certificate system is updated weekly, and new information is published on the App for EU Travel.
Covid-19 Travel News From The United Kingdom
The UK’s NHS Covid Pass is equivalent to the EU Digital Covid Certificate. However, travellers must still meet vaccination requirements for the countries they wish to travel to.

Covid-19 Travel News From The United States
Vaccine certificates must show that at least 14 days and no more than 270 days have passed since the last vaccine dose. If more than 270 days have passed, your vaccine certificate must show a booster dose.

Other
If you are travelling to the European Union to walk the Camino and you aren’t from any of the aforementioned countries, please check your government’s official website for the latest travel information.
Testing & Testing Centres
Do you need to get a COVID-19 test done before departing Europe?
Book book a test. You can choose your location from a wide list of European testing centres. Travellers from the US can also pack this CDC-approved test in their carry-on so they don’t have to find a testing location abroad.
You can get a COVID-19 test in the following cities along the Camino & Via Francigena:
- Santiago (Spain)
- Madrid (Spain)
- Porto (Portugal)
- Rome (Italy)
- Siena (Italy)
- Paris (France)
Country-specific COVID-19 Travel News And Rules
Below, you’ll find the latest information for each of our Camino countries regarding hotels, restaurants and the wearing of facemasks.
Spain
Passengers must submit a completed locator form to enter Spain. This form can be completed online via the Spain Travel Health website.
Spain’s COVID situation is under control, and more than 85% of the population is fully vaccinated.
General Rules:
- Borders – Open with testing/vaccination requirements
- The land border between Spain and Portugal is open with no restrictions
- Restaurants, Cafes & Bars – Open
- Hotels – Open
- Public Transport – Mask is mandatory
- Mask – It is recommended to wear a mask when social distancing is impossible.

Portugal
Passengers arriving in Portugal must present a Digital Covid Certificate or evidence of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours before arrival. Passengers must also submit a completed locator form. The passenger locator form can be found here.
Portugal has fully vaccinated 91% of its population, so restaurants, bars and more are open and operating without curfews.
General Rules:
- Borders – Open with testing/vaccination requirements
- Restaurants, Cafes & Bars – Bars & Clubs require a booster dose or proof of a negative COVID test.
- Hotels – An EU Covid Digital Certificate or proof of negative COVID test is required to check into all hotels in Portugal
- Public Transport – Mask is mandatory
- Mask – Mandatory in closed spaces and recommended outdoors when social distancing isn’t possible

France
If you are vaccinated, you can travel to France with no issues. You need to present proof of vaccination and a sworn declaration, which you can find here.
If you are not vaccinated, you must present proof of a negative COVID-19 test, pay attention to the country’s traffic light entry system (red, amber and green list countries) and potentially quarantine on arrival. For more information, click here.
With 78% of the population fully vaccinated, France has no curfew and no internal travel restrictions.

- Restaurants, Cafes & Bars – Open
- Hotels – Open
- Public Transport – Mask is mandatory
- Mask – Masks are no longer required in restaurants, cafes and other inside spaces.

Italy
People travelling to Italy must complete a passenger locator form and provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test. These rules are in force until at least April 30, 2022.

80% of the Italian population is fully vaccinated, and the whole country is now in the white zone, which means there is minimum risk. You can read the full list of measures on the official Italian tourism website.

- Public Transport – Mask is mandatory
- Mask – Masks are required indoors in restaurants, shops, museums, etc.
