The St Francis Way is also called Via Francigena di San Francesco and Cammino di Francesco in Italian.
The St Francis Way or Cammino di Francesco is an alternative route to the ancient Roman road between Florence and Rome, following in the footsteps of Saint Francis (San Francesco), founder of the Franciscan tradition. This long-distance walking trail inspired by the life and work of Saint Francis, is recommended for experienced walkers as the mountainous terrain makes the trail quite challenging, particularly sections 1 and 3. Walkers however will be rewarded with stunning and peaceful countryside; passing through areas of impressive natural beauty, as well as important Franciscan sites including Assisi and Rieti, in Umbria. The Cammino di Francesco or St Francis Way finishes at the Vatican, where you can apply for your ‘Testimonium‘ of pilgrimage to Rome.
