My walking partner and I chose to walk a section of the Via Francigena in Tuscany that was well-traveled. That said, in 5 days of walking, we crossed only 4 other pilgrims on our journey! Among a myriad of special moments this one occurred on our last walking day to Siena. In a large open field we came across a farmer who was tending his extensive garden. I asked him in Italian what he was growing and he wanted me to come off the path and down into the garden so I could feel the richness of his soil. He was so welcoming so proud of the fact that he grew completely organic produce and that all of what he grew was to share with family and friends…. so awesome!
