For those on the Camino de Santiago and arriving in Santiago de Compostela this month, there are many activities and events to enjoy Christmas-time in the city of St James. Here’s a selection of things to do and see this Christmas in Santiago de Compostela:
Santiago Cathedral Crib
From 5th December until 7th January, pilgrims, locals and visitors can visit the crib at Santiago Cathedral (also called ‘belén’). The cathedral’s crib is made of over 550 hand carved figures.
Praza do Obradoiro Crib
The city will be looking even prettier than usual, with Christmas lights and decorations all over town. The Praza do Obradoiro will also have its annual crib, located outside the Pazo de Raxoi.
Christmas Market in Praza da Quintana
Praza da Quintana will be home to Santiago’s first Christmas Market, featuring over 50 stalls with crafts and Christmas-related items such as ceramics, trees, flowers and other Christmas decorations; as well as seasonal food, workshops, carousel and many music and entertainment events.
Christmas is also a special time to see the botafumeiro in action. You will be able to see the botafumeiro during mass in Santiago Cathedral on Christmas Day, 30th December and Epiphany Day (6th January).
Ice skating in the Alameda Park
An ice rink will be installed at the Alameda Park, Santiago’s favourite green space, during the Christmas period to be enjoyed by children from 8 to 80.
Compostela Gastronómica Nadal – Christmas cookery workshops
Christmas cookery workshops will be taking place for all ages during the Christmas period in Santiago de Compostela, provided by Compostela Gastronómica at Santiago’s food market (Mercado de Abastos). This is your chance to brush up on your cooking skills!
