"A friend and I decided to do the last 100+ KM of the Camino Portuguese Coastal, a trek about which we knew very little and did not have time for extensive research in advance. While we chose to carry our packs, we were not confident enough to opt for finding albergues as we went, as neither of us had experienced The Camino before. Plus, we did not want to risk being in a common room of bunks with several snoring strangers. So based upon the reviews I read, I chose CaminoWays.com as our lodging provider. Hoping to stay at places that had a bit of extra charm, we chose the "Country Cottages" option. Boy, am I glad we did!! While the actual room accommodations at a few of the hotels were pretty standard, their locations (a block from the water or less) made them worthwhile. And over half of the establishments were absolutely fantastic! I have to say that the "resort" in Calas de Reis (incredibly beautiful, and the most charming hosts!), and the casa rural in Padron were our favorites and far exceeded our expectations. Do yourself a favor and opt for the Country Cottages!"

Camino Portugues Coastal Last 100km

The Camino Portugues Coastal last 100km is the last stretch of the Camino Portugues Coastal. This Portugues Coastal Route or Portuguese Way starts in the elegant seaside town of Baiona, in the heart of the Rías Baixas, famous for its Albariño white wine and delicious shellfish. Pilgrims can walk over 7 days from Baiona to arrive in Santiago de Compostela.

This is a superb Camino route, ideal for the Summer months. The weather along the Camino Portugues Coastal last 100km can be quite rainy during the year but it clears up in the summer months and the climate is comparable to the Pacific North West region of North America.

There are many things to see on this route which should appeal to those interested in a more simplistic life, filled with history, great food, wine, and beaches.

Visit Monte Real castle in Baiona, stroll along the seafront and go for a swim in the ocean before starting your journey. From Baiona, you will follow the coast trail to Vigo, enjoying views of the magnificent Cíes Islands.

The fishing city of Vigo boasts many fine buildings of Romanesque architecture with a host of museums that will keep any history buff entertained. In addition, a visit to the historic town square (Casco Vello) is advised as is taking some time to relax on one of the city’s many beaches.

The Camino Portugues Coastal last 100km joins the classic Camino Portugues in the town of Redondela where you will start meeting fellow pilgrims. You will continue your journey passing many small villages and towns such as Pontesampaio, wonderful Pontevedra, the spa town of Caldas de Reis and Padrón, home of the famous peppers.

You arrive in Baiona.

Vigo

Today you will follow the coast from Baiona to Nigrán and finally to the city of Vigo. You will enjoy fantastic views of the Bay of Vigo, with the magnificent Illas Cíes and its Natural Park in the horizon. On a hot day, stop at the blue flag beach Praia América in Nigrán for a quick swim.

Pontevedra

Today, you will cross the Verdugo River over Ponte Sampaio. It is in this bridge is where Napoleon’s army suffered one of its greatest defeats in Galicia. From Ponte Sampaio the Camino continues along a cobbled road taking pilgrims to the 13th century Church of Santa María, where you can enjoy magnificent views over the Bay of Vigo while walking towards Pontevedra.

Caldas de Reis

Today, starting in the city of Pontevedra, the Camino will take you through chestnut groves and pine and eucalyptus woods. In the village of Ponte Cabras, take a minute to admire the rectory of Santa María de Alba. At Lombo da Maceira you will spot a statue of Saint James with his walking stick, showing pilgrims the way. On your way to Caldas de Reis you will pass the hamlet of Tivo with its lovely fountain and public washing area. You will be staying in the spa town of Caldas de Reis for the night.

Padron

From the spa town of Caldas de Reis, the Camino Portugués takes you across the river Umia and the hot springs that have given the town its name since Roman times. The Camino trail takes you once again to forests, gradually climbing to the village of Santa Mariña. After a descent you will cross the river Fontenlo before making your way through pine forests to today’s final destination: the town of Padrón, believed to be arrival point of the body of Saint James when it was brought to Santiago de Compostela by ship.

Santiago de Compostela is a gem of a city: small enough to be explored and be discovered on foot but always vibrant and lively. Wander the cobbled streets of its UNESCO-listed old town, go for a stroll in the Alameda Park and discover regional flavours in the local market (Mercado de Abastos) and the many restaurants and bars.

Baiona

Vigo Airport 30km: From Vigo you can take a bus to Baiona. There are buses every 30 minutes from Vigo on weekdays. On Saturdays and Sundays there are buses every hour. The company providing this service is called ATSA and the buses are blue. See: http://atsahorarios.com/

Santiago de Compostela Airport 129km: From Santiago you can take the shuttle bus to the bus station or the train station. From there you can catch a bust to Vigo Bus Station (about 2 hours, see www.monbus.es) or a train (1 hour and 30 min approximately, see: www.renfe.es). From Vigo to Baiona you can take a bus, taking about 40 min (http://www.vigobus.com/, http://atsahorarios.com/)

Porto Airport 160km: Best option is to get to Vigo either by train (www.cp.pt) or bus (www.autna.com). From Vigo city then take a bus to Baiona (http://www.vigobus.com/, http://atsahorarios.com/).

Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela Airport 12km: There is a shuttle bus from/ to the city to Santiago airport, departing every 30min. Bus stops include the city centre (Praza de Galicia), the bus station (Estación de Autobuses) and the train station (Estación de Ferrocarril). See www.empresafreire.com.

A Coruña Airport 70km: From Santiago you can take a train to A Coruña (30 min approximately) and then take a bus from Alfonso Molina (line 4051) to the airport (every 30 min, takes 20 min approximately). Monbus has services from Santiago to A Coruña Airport (every 3 hours), see monbus.es/en for details.

Vigo Airport 90km: From Santiago you can take a train to Vigo Guixar (see www.renfe.com) or a bus to Travesia de Vigo (every hour). You should then take a city bus from Travesia de Vigo to Vigo Airport (every 30 min).

Porto Airport 210km: There is a direct bus connection between Santiago (Estación de Autobuses) and Porto Airport once or twice a day (taking 4h or 6h resp.). See www.alsa.es.
