Section 7 of the Via de la Plata Camino route starts in gorgeous Zamora, a hidden gem heritage city with 24 Romanesque churches, the highest number in Europe! this Camino section finishes in Puebla de Sanabria in the heart of the lush Sanabria Valley. Along the way, you will walk on peaceful country tracks and stop in charming little hamlets. The landscape on this part of the Via de la Plata begins to alternate between red earth farmland and greener hills and woodlands. This section of the Camino requires a reasonable level of fitness, mainly because of its length.

1 Zamora

Zamora has it all to attract visitors, with a Romanesque cathedral, fortified walls and a view overlooking Río Duero, you are sure to find something you like. Zamora is known locally as the “little Salamanca” because of its architectural heritage.

2 Zamora to Montamarta - 19km

Day one cuts through typical Castilla y Leon landscape: red earth and crop fields. There is not much shade to be found along the way but as it is a short day, you should arrive in Montamarta before the heat hits its peak. When you arrive, you will have a short transfer to your hotel in Zamora.

3 Montamarta to Granja de Moreruela - 22km

4 Granja de Moreruela to Tabara - 28km

Today, the landscape is a greener with some trees scattered around creating some shelter from the sun. Overall, it is a simple and pleasant stroll to Tabara.

5 Tabara to Camarzana - 25km

The Camino passes through a plateau between the Elsa River and Río Tera today and its water provides a lot of vegetation. When in Santa Marta, you should visit its 12th century Romanesque church.

6 Camarzana to Mombuey - 30km

Today we will enter the Sanabria Valley as the Camino now follows the course of the attractive Río Tera. This is a pleasant and attractive walk through the countryside encompassing quiet tracks, charming rural hamlets, water channels, poplar trees, and dams.This land is to home wild boars and even shy Iberian wolves! The landscape starts to change to bush lands and scrub as we approach Mombuey.

7 Mombuey to Puebla de Sanabria - 33km

The Camino moves through more open countryside but there are still many poplar and oak trees to providing shelter. In the village of San Salvador de Palazuelos, you can climb the bell tower of Iglesia de Santiago to take in the outstanding views. You will cross Río Tera one more time before entering the stunning town of Puebla de Sanabria.

Puebla de Sanabria has a castle overlooking the town and the valley of Río Tera. With its cobbled streets, the village is a pleasant spot to unwind in a peaceful locality.

Other option: Valladolid airport (90km)
Valladolid has a small airport. Ryanair offers seasonal flights from London (Stansted) and flights from Barcelona and Malaga regularly. Iberia and Vueling serve the route between Valladolid and Barcelona as well. See www.skyscanner.com.

From: Madrid (Barajas) airport (255km)
There is a bus connection from/to Madrid (La estación de autobuses de Madrid (estación sur) ) 5 times/ day, taking approx. 2h45. See http://www.avanzabus.com.
The way from/ to the bus station can be taken with the metro (stop’s name is Méndez Álvaro, line 6), and with a change at the station “Nuevos Ministerios”, it is possible to get to/ back from the airport (all terminals, line 8). See www.metromadrid.es.

From: Valladolid airport (90km)
Between Zamora and Valladolid (stop: Estaction de Autobuses), a bus route with departs in a 2 hours interval (less on sat and sun) and travel time of approx 1h20 is available. See www.laregionalvsa.com.
The way from/ to the airport can be taken by bus as well. A bus line serves the route between the airport and the bus station (Estaction de Autobuses) every 90min (approx travel time is 30min). See http://www.aena-aeropuertos.es for an overview and www.linecar.es for the timetable of the bus line.

How to get back from Puebla de Sanabria

To: Madrid (Barajas) airport (360km)
There is a bus connection from/to Madrid (La estación de autobuses de Madrid (estación sur) ) 3 times/ day, taking approx. 4h. See http://www.avanzabus.com . It is also possible to take the train once a day (3h15). See www.renfe.com.
In Madrid, you can find an urban train (Line C1), linking the train station (Chamartin) with the airport (Terminal 4). See www.renfe.com. The way from/ to the bus station can be taken with the metro (stop’s name is Méndez Álvaro, line 6), and with a change at the station “Nuevos Ministerios”, it is possible to get to/ back from the airport (all terminals, line 8). To: Santiago de Compostela (245km)
Both cities are linked with a train route, departing 3 times/ day (taking between 2h30 and 4h). See www.renfe.com. It is possible to take a bus as well (2 departs/ day, travel time approx. 4h40).
There is a shuttle bus from/ to the airport in Santiago, departing every 30min. Bus stops are. e.g., the bus station (Estación de Autobuses), the train station (Estación de Ferrocarril) or the city centre (Plaza de Galicia). See www.empresafreire.com.
