Section 2 of the Geneva Way route of the Camino de Santiago leaves the alpine landscapes and vineyards behind, and takes walkers from the walled town of Genix-sur-Guiers to the Monts du Pilat. The trail then descends to the Dauphinoise plain, across Pays du Voironnais and Bièvre-Valloire.The landscapes ahead will change from valleys of cereal crops to hills with lush chestnut forests. Along this quiet and peaceful Camino route, you can admire beautiful villages and tiny hamlets, dotted with traditional adobe houses.This section of the Geneva Camino finishes at Chavanay, by the Pilat Mountains, across the Rhône River. Next stage: to Le Puy!

1 Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers

Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers, your starting point for this section of the Geneva Way, is a former walled city. Go for a stroll in the old town to see the old ramparts before you set off.

2 Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers to Valencogne - 22km

Today, you will leave behind the mountains of Savoy and enter the Isère region. You will spot the first adobe houses, traditional in the region. The Geneva Way – Camino de Santiago runs along the Guiers River and then ‘leap frogs’ along the hilly landscape, taking you to Charancieu (393 m), then Valencogne, where you will see a tryptic of St James in the local church.

3 Valencogne to Le Grand Lemps - 19km

Today, the Camino trail takes you to Bièvre-Valloire country. The trail passes near Lake Paladru, through the former Carthusian monastery Sylve Bénite (monastic site founded around 1116) and leads, after climbing to Soulier (702 m), to The Farm Futeau, surrounded by nature. A final steep descent will take you to Grand Lemps. We have sourced a very special property for your accommodation tonight, you will be staying at an artist’s house.

4 Le Grand Lemps to Côté-St-André - 15km

Today you have a flat and easy walking day ahead. The Geneva Way will take you past at least three castles. Music lovers will be interested to know La Côte-Saint-André is the birthplace of composer Hector Berlioz. Each year, the town hosts a music festival in honour of its most famous son.

5 Côté-St-André to Bellegarde-Poussieu - 31km

Today you have a long walking day ahead. After Mount Cardon, you will be walking in rich woodland, on your way to Faramans and then Pommier de Beaurepaire. After crossing the shady Favan Tourdan woods you will reach Revel. The surrounding hills are filled with chestnut groves and lush fields. The Camino will take you to the villages of Moissieu-sur-Dolon, the site of the former Hospice of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem; and finally to Bellegarde-Poussieu where you should visit the Chapel of Our Lady of La Salette, from the 13th century.

6 Bellegarde-Poussieu to Chavanay - 34km

Today, after passing St Romain de Surieu (249 m), the Carrefour du Grand Oak welcomes you to the ‘Bois de Limone’ woods before joining Assieu. With the Monts du Pilat in the skyline, you will cross the orchards of Auberive and Clonas on Varèze to emerge in the Rhone Valley. You will cross the river separating the departments of Isère and the Loire to reach Chavanay and its church at the foot of the Monts du Pilat, your finishing point.

7 Chavanay

Chavanay is a small town with plenty of charm. Take some time to explore its pretty medieval streets and taste some of the local delicacies.

Other option (b): Chambéry airport (30km)
Chambéry airport only offers seasonal flights (between December and April). Jet2 and flybe fly from/to Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Southampton, Birmingham and more. From: Lyon airport (80km)
The ‘Rhonexpress’ connects Lyon airport with the city centre and train station (named Lyon Part Dieu) (every 15min, approx. 30 min travel time). See www.rhonexpress.fr.
There is also a direct train from Lyon airport to Pont de Beauvoisin (every 2 hours/ day, approx. 55min). See www.voyages-sncf.com.
There is no public transport from Pont de Beauvoisin Gare (train station) to St Genix-sur-Guiers, so we recommend you book a taxi (10km approx.).
From: Geneva airport (100km)
Geneva airport is close to city centre, you can take the train or bus to the centre (stop name: Cornavin station). See www.gva.ch.
From Geneva (Cornavin station) you can take a train to Pont de Beauvoisin (via Lyon, every 2 hours/ day, 2h30-4h travel time). See www.voyages-sncf.com.
From Pont de Beauvoisin Gare (train station) to St Genix-sur-Guiers, we recommend you take a taxi as there is no public transport (10km approx.).

How to get back from St Clair-du-Rhône:
To: Lyon airport (45km)
There is a direct train from St-Clair-du-Rhone to Lyon (Part Dieu) (every 2 hours/ day, approx. 30min). See www.voyages-sncf.co.uk. There are more train connections to Lyon (e.g. to the smaller station Jean Mace). From the station to the airport, you can take the ‘Rhonexpress’, connecting the city centre with the airport (every 15min, approx. 30 min travel time). See www.rhonexpress.fr.
To: Geneva airport (170km)
You can take a train from St Clair-du-Rhône to Geneva via Lyon (Station ‘Part Dieu’ or ‘Perrache’) (every 2 hours/ day, approx. 3h-3h30). See www.voyages-sncf.co.uk.
The airport is close to city centre. From Cornavin Station you can take a bus or train to Geneva Airport. See www.gva.ch.
