The first stage of the Geneva Way route of the Camino de Santiago, also known as Via Gebennensis (Jacobsweg), starts in elegant Geneva. From the bohemian quarter of Carouge, in Geneva, the Camino takes you out of the city to the iconic Mont Saléve and into the departments of Haute-Savoie and Savoie.
Enjoy a relaxing evening by Lake Geneva before setting off and taste Switzerland’s most famous dish: cheese fondue. To finish this section of the Geneva Camino to Santiago, you will walk up the charismatic Mount Tournier before arriving in the pretty village of Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers.

1 Geneva

Arrive in Geneva and enjoy a walk around this cosmopolitan city. Don’t miss the ‘jet d’eau’, Geneva’s iconic lake fountain, and don’t forget to taste ‘fondue’ and Switzerland’s finest chocolate.

2 Geneva to Col du Mont Sion - 20km

From Geneva, you will reach the border and cross at St Julien-en-Genevois. From there, you will gain some elevation and explore the flanks of Mount Salève. This itinerary offers a beautiful panoramic views of the Jura Mountains, and in particular on the summit of ‘Crêt de la Neige’. En route you will pass the ruins of the ancient monastery of ‘Chartreuse de Pomier’.

3 Col du Mont Sion to Chaumont - 18km

Today, the Geneva Way trail takes you across beautiful rolling hills and country landscapes, heading West to Charly. Here you should visit the Saint James chapel and statue before continuing on to Contamines and Sarzin. Enjoy the views of the Barbannaz waterfall below, before reaching Frangy.

4 Chaumont to Motz - 22km

Today you will be walking South, across lush valleys. The Camino route passes above the village of Seyssel and other picturesque villages before descending to the Rhône River and the ‘Pont du Fier’, gate to the Savoie region and its vineyards.

5 Motz to Chanaz - 15km

Today’s walk will take see you follow the GR 65. Your path passes Pont de la Loi and joins the GR 9 (Jura – Mediterranean) for a short stretch of road. Your Camino journey then takes you to the village of Chanaz, crossed by the Canal Savières between the Rhone and the Lac du Bourget (where you can stop for a beautiful boat trip). The architecture of the village and proximity of the canal give today’s itinerary a special charm.

6 Chanaz to Yenne - 16km

Today, you will continue your Camino from Chanaz atop Mount St Romain. The walking route leaves the banks of the Rhône to gain altitude and cross the Jongieux vineyards at the foot of Mont du Chat. A short descent will brings you back to the Rhône valley and on to Yenne where you should visit its 12th century church.

7 Yenne to Saint Genix sur Guiers - 23km

6h | +731m / -747m
After this medieval stage, the profile of the Geneva Way becomes mountainous again. You will walk up Mount Tournier (877 m) before descending gradually on to the plain of St Maurice Rotherens (650 m). The descent will continue to the Truison River, then head back to the Chapel Pigneux, dominating the village of St. Genix sur Guiers, home town of the brioche with red pralines (a must-taste!).

8 Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers

Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers is the final point for this stage of the Geneva Way. A former walled town, you will find some of the old ramparts if you go for a stroll. The old town is well preserved and you can visit the recently refurbished church, not far from the centre.

Geneva International airport is connected with many cities across Europe. EasyJet and Jet2 fly to many destinations in the UK, e.g. London (Luton and Gatwick), Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Belfast (seasonal) or Bristol, while Aer Lingus flies from/to Dublin and Cork. See www.skyscanner.com.
Other option: Lyon airport (150km)
EasyJet flies from Lyon to London (Stansted & Gatwick), Edinburgh, Porto, Madrid. Aer Lingus has a route between Lyon and Dublin. Chambéry airport only offers seasonal flights , mainly for the ski season (between December and April). Jet2 and flybe fly to/from Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Southampton, Birmingham and more. How to get to Geneva
From: Geneva airport (4km)
Geneva airport is very close to city centre, you can take the bus or train to Cornavin station. See www.gva.ch.
From: Lyon airport (150km)
The ‘Rhonexpress’ (shuttle train) connects the airport with Lyon city centre and the train station (named Lyon ‘Part Dieu’, every 15min, approx. 30 min travel time). See www.rhonexpress.fr.
There is a direct train from Lyon (Part Dieu) to Geneva (Cornavin station) (at least every 2 hours/ day, approx. 1h45). See www.voyages-sncf.com.

 

How to get back from St Genix-sur-Guiers
To: Lyon airport (80km)
From St Genix-sur-Guiers you should take a taxi (approx. 10km) to Pont de Beauvoisin Gare (train station). From Pont de Beauvoisin you can take a direct train to Lyon airport (every 2 hours/ day, approx. 55min). See www.voyages-sncf.com. The ‘Rhonexpress’ connects Lyon city centre and train station (named Lyon Part Dieu) with the airport (every 15min, approx. 30 min travel time). See www.rhonexpress.fr.
To: Geneva airport (100km)
From St Genix-sur-Guiers you should take a taxi (approx. 10km) to Pont de Beauvoisin Gare (train station).
From Pont de Beauvoisin you can take a train to Geneva (central station is Cornavin) via Lyon (every 2 hours/ day, 2h30-4h travel time). See www.voyages-sncf.com.
The airport is close to city centre. You can take a bus or train from Cornavin to Geneva Airport. See www.gva.ch.
To: Chambéry airport (30km)
