The final stage of the Cluny Way takes you from Montbrison to Le Puy en Velay. Along this route you will cross the lush Forez region with its hills adorned in heather and coniferous forest. From these highlands, the view on a clear day is breathtaking, here you can marvel at the mountains of Velay and Vivarais, the Natural Park of Pilat and even spot the snow-capped Alps. On this section of the Cluny Camino, pilgrims walk through the Loire region to the changing landscapes of the Haute-Loire. The Loire river will guide you through the historic village of Retournac on your way to your final destination: Le Puy en Velay.

1 Montbrison

You will begin walking from the historical town of Montbrison. Here you can take some time to explore its collegiate church Notre Dame d’Esperance and marvel in the gothic architecture before embarking on your journey.

2 Montbrison to Marols - 22km

Here you will leave Montbrison to tackle the slopes of the Forez Mountains. The Romanesque chapel of Montsupt features a viewpoint, where you can marvel at the most spectacular panoramic views. Further, along the way you will reach St Jean Soleymieux, a town where once upon a time, pilgrims came to pray in the crypt of the 11th century church. This route will take you through scenic forest trails to reach the village of Marols.

3 Marols to Merle-Leignecq - 20km

A beautiful forest trail will take you to the highest point of the route between Montbrison and Le Puy en Velay, and the village of Montarcher. After this 1,165 metre ascent you will be rewarded by spectacular views of the the Velay and Vivarais. While passing through you can find the remains of the Way Bolène, an ancient route of Celtic origin which was also used in Roman times to connect Lyon and Aquitaine.

4 Merle-Leignecq to Retournac - 28km

Today you will begin waking to the Andrable, a small picturesque river with a number of remaining mills. Further along this trail you will notice the landscape change as you enter the department of the Loire Haute-Loire, Valprivas, the valley of Ance and gorges of the Loire.

6 Saint-Vincent to Le Puy en Velay - 22km

Today you will walk through charming hamlets and villages, crossing the Emblavez basin, through lush grassland and cropfields. Here you will reach the Lavoûte-sur-Loire, the river that twists around the magnificent Chateau de Polignac, before reaching the “city of the Virgin.”

How to get to Montbrison

Best Option: Lyon airport (80km)
– EasyJet operates in Lyon, serving flights from/ to London (Stansted & Gatwick), Edinburgh. Aer Lingus has a route between Lyon and Dublin. It is possible to gat flights to the busiest airports in Europe, e.g. London Heathrow (British airways), Madrid (easyJet), Paris (Charles de Gaulle and Orly, both with Air France), Frankfurt am Main (Lufthansa) or Porto (easyJet). Other option:  St. Etienne airport (25km)

– The airport in Saint Etienne is a small one. At least, Ryanair serves flights from/ to Porto (3 times/ week), which can be taken for indirect transatlantic  flights. www.skyscanner.com .

 

How to get back from Le Puy en Velay

 

Best Option: Lyon airport (145km)

The airport in Le Puy is a small one. At least, Hex’Air serves 2 daily flights from/ to Paris (Orly), which can be taken for indirect flights. www.hexair.com (only from mon-fri).

How to get to Montbrison

From: Lyon airport (80km)
– The Rhonexpress connects the airport with the city centre and the train station (named Lyon Part Dieu)(every 15min, approx. 30 min travel time). See http://www.rhonexpress.fr/ . A train connection via Saint Etienne (Chateaucreux) between Montbrison and Lyon (Part Dieu) exists (regular departures, approx. 1h40). See http://www.voyages-sncf.co.uk/

From:  St. Etienne airport (25km)

The best option from/ to airport is to take the coach bus (ligne 111): There are only a few connections firectly from/ to the airport, but it is possible to get on/ off at the stop “Rond Point Colonna”, close to the airport. (almost hourly departures, excepting sunday. travel time 30-40min). See http://www.loire.fr/jcms/lw_886668/horaires and look for “ligne 111”.
It is also possible to take the well-served train route from/ to Buthéon (via Saint Etienne, [approx. 1h40]) or Saint Etienne [approx. 55min] directly. The way between the stations can be taken by taxi (30min from/ to St Etienne and 5min from/ to Buthéon). How to get back from Le Puy en Velay

 

To: Lyon airport (145km)

The “Rhonexpress” (shuttle train) connects the airport with the city centre and the train station (named Lyon Part Dieu)(every 15min, approx. 30 min travel time). See www.rhonexpress.fr.
A direct train connection between Le Puy-en-Velay and Lyon (Part Dieu) exists (3 times/ day, approx. 2h15). See www.voyages-sncf.com.

To: Le Puy-en-Velay airport (12km)
The airport is approx. 12km far from the city centre and cannot be taken by public transport. A taxi might to be book in advance. See www.taxis-graille.fr.
