The second section of the Cluny Way takes pilgrims from Charlieu to Montbrison. Embarking on your Camino adventure from the historical town of Charlieu, this route will take you through the beautiful Roanne region, known for the production of mesh and textiles as well as fantastic food! This section of the Cluny Camino will take you through areas of historical splendour, along picturesque paths, rivers, valleys and canals.

1 Charlieu

Today you embark on your Camino journey from from the historical town of Charlieu. Here you can visit its benedictine abbey dating back the IX century and a number of other medieval buildings before you set off on your way!

2 Charlieu to Saint-Haon-le-Châtel - 22km

As this is a relatively long stage you can avail off a a short taxi transfer which will cut 5km off your journey. The abbey church of La-Bénisson-Dieu adorned in beautiful glazed tiles is the starting point of this stage. Along this stage you will reach the small village of Saint-Haon-le-Châtel situated on the foothills of the Madeleine. This village is a living museum of the Middle Ages.

3 Saint-Haon-le-Châtel to St-Jean St-Maurice - 21km

The first half of today will be dedicated to crossing the côte Roannaises, you will pass through AOC vineyeards growing on the Terres Rouges. In the afternoon, you will leave the vineyards to cross the plain of Roanne and join the Loire Valley in St-Jean St-Maurice.

4 St-Jean St-Maurice to Pommiers-en-Forez - 20km

Today you will begin walking from the Romanesque church of St-Jean St-Maurice via an undulating path which will take you to the villages of Bully and Dancé. Today you will finish up in the charming village of Pommiers and its impressive priory.

5 Pommiers-en-Forez to Montverdun - 21km

Today you will reach the pretty village of Pommiers where you can explorer its Benedictine priory built in the XIth and XIIth century. After passing a number of ponds you will head to Montverdun, a village adorned with monastic basalt buildings.

6 Montverdun to Montbrison - 16km

A relatively short days walking awaits you today, the path will take you between flat land and mountains to reach picturesque Montbrison. Here you will have plenty of time to explore the town, home to the Notre Dame College, the Convent of the Cordeliers and a selection of museums. On this way you will pass the village of Champdieu where you can see its Benedictine priory and church.

Discover the historical town of Montbrison with its collegiate church Notre Dame d’Esperance in gothic architecture style.

Best Option: Lyon airport (80km)
– EasyJet operates in Lyon, serving flights from/ to London (Stansted & Gatwick), Edinburgh. Aer Lingus has a route between Lyon and Dublin. It is possible to fly from the busiest airports in Europe, e.g. London Heathrow (British airways), Madrid (easyJet), Paris (Charles de Gaulle and Orly, both with Air France), Frankfurt am Main (Lufthansa) or Porto (easyJet). How to get back from Montbrison
Best Option: Lyon airport (80km)

Saint Etienne airport is small. Ryanair serves flights from/ to Porto (3 times/ week), which can be taken for indirect transatlantic  flights. http://www.skyscanner.com .

How to get to Charlieu
From: Lyon airport (80km)
– The Rhonexpress connects the airport with the city centre and the train station (named Lyon Part Dieu)(every 15min, approx. 30 min travel time). See http://www.rhonexpress.fr/ .
– A train connection between Roanne and Lyon (Part Dieu) exists (hourly, approx. 1h20). See http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ . The way between Charlieu and Roanne can be taken by bus, 2 lines (“ligne” 208 and 214) serve the route between the towns, taking between 40-50min with regular departures from mon-fri (less on saturday and sunday). See http://www.loire.fr/jcms/lw_886668/horaires . SNCF offers additional buses (autocars) from the station “Puilly-sous-Charlieu”, close to Charlieu. See http://www.voyages-sncf.com/

 

How to get back from Montbrison
To: Lyon airport (80km)
– The Rhonexpress connects the airport with the city centre and the train station (named Lyon Part Dieu)(every 15min, approx. 30 min travel time). See http://www.rhonexpress.fr/ . A train connection via Saint Etienne (Chateaucreux) between Montbrison and Lyon (Part Dieu) exists (regular departures, approx. 1h40). See http://www.voyages-sncf.co.uk/

To:  St. Etienne airport (25km)

– The best option from/ to airport is to take the coach bus (ligne 111): There are only a few connections directly from/ to the airport, but it is possible to get on/ off at the stop “Rond Point Colonna”, close to the airport. (departs approximately every hour, except on Sundays. travel time 30-40min). See http://www.loire.fr/jcms/lw_886668/horaires and look for “ligne 111”.
– It is also possible to take the well-served train route from/ to Buthéon (via Saint Etienne, [approx. 1h40]) or Saint Etienne [approx. 55min] directly. The way between the stations can be taken by taxi (30min from/ to St Etienne and 5min from/ to Buthéon).
