Section one of The Cluny Way takes pilgrims from Cluny to Charlieu. Soon after leaving Cluny the landscapes of southern Burgundy will become instantly recognisable. Along this way you’ll be accompanied by dense forests of hardwoods and conifers. You’ll pass through pastures with grazing farm animals and discover the vineyards of Burgundy, the home of Beaujolais red and white wine. The Cluny Camino then stretches to link the department of Saone et Loire, the Rhône and Beaujolais hills and the Department of the Loire.

1 Cluny

You embark on your Camino journey from the town of Cluny. Here there are a number of places you can choose to visit including: the Benedictine Abbey, la Tour des Fromages, Hotel-Dieu, the Museum of Art and Archaeology  and the Romanesque houses.

2 Cluny to Tramayes - 18km

The Abbey of Cluny is the starting point for walkers who are preparing to take the path of the Camino de Santiago. This route is relatively easy until you reach the village of Ste Cecile where you will face a slight incline at the ridge between the valley of the Grosne and Vallouzin, before reaching Tramaye with its stunning viewpoint.

3 Tramayes to Ouroux - 16km

Today you will leave Tramayes and its 16th century castle to walk towards the village of Cenves. Further along the trail, you will make a stop at St Jacques des Arrets to visit the church where John Fusaro, painter of the school Lyonnaise, created a series of frescoes accounting the adventures of St James.

4 Ouroux to Propieres - 18km

Today you will mostly be walking on forest paths, one of the highlights at this stage is Mont Saint-Rigaud, where the department of Rhone and Beaujolais Vert meet. Here you can catch some beautiful views of the Jura and the Alps.

5 Propieres to Le Cergne - 19km

From Propières you will shortly reach the pass of Echarmeaux at 712 meters. Here the landscape undulates, alternating with beautiful forest crossings. Here the “king of the forest” is the Douglas fir tree. After crossing the pass of Aillets and Escorbans of the of the Buche you will reach the small village of Cergne that was founded at the beginning of the last century.

6 Le Cergne to Charlieu - 16km

Today you have a relatively short days walking ahead of you on the way to Charlieu, At Charlieu you will have plenty of time to visit this richly historical town where you can explore the 9th century Benedictine abbey along with a number of churches, and museums.

7 Charlieu

Your final destination at this stage of the Cluny Camino is the beautiful town of Charlieu. This little historical town offers pilgrims a a number of different sights including a benedictine abbey dating back the IX century and many more medieval buildings.

How to get to Cluny
Best option: Lyon airport (85km)
– EasyJet operates in Lyon, serving flights from/ to London (Stansted & Gatwick), Edinburgh. Aer Lingus has a route between Lyon and Dublin. It is possible to fly from the major airports in Europe, e.g. London Heathrow (British airways), Madrid (easyJet), Paris (Charles de Gaulle and Orly, both with Air France), Frankfurt am Main (Lufthansa) or Porto (easyJet). Other option: Paris airport (360km)

The 2 airports in Paris (Charles de Gaulle [CDG] and Orly) belong to the major hubs in Europe and many airlines operate in Paris.

How to get back from Charlieu
Best Option: Lyon airport (80km)

Transfers to and from Airport

How to get to Cluny
For all connections given below, it is necessary to take the bus (line 7) between Cluny and Mâcon-Loché (for TGV, the highspeed trains) or Mâcon ville (for regional trains). Availability of the route at least 5 times/ day with an approx. travel time of 30min from/ to Gare TGV (Mâcon-Loché) and 35min from/ to Gare SNCF (Mâcon ville). Please check carefully what stations you need for your trip!

From: Lyon airport (85km)
– The Rhonexpress connects the airport with the city centre and the train station (named Lyon Part Dieu)(every 15min, approx. 30 min travel time). A well-served train connection between both stations (Mâcon ville and Mâcon-Loché)  and Lyon (Part Dieu) exists (travel time approx. 30min (TGV) and 45min (TER)). See http://www.voyages-sncf.com/
From: Paris airport (360km)
A well-served direct train route between Mâcon ville and Mâcon-Loché and Paris (Gare de Lyon and Bercy) is available (taking approx 1h40 with TGV and 4h20 with the regional train). See http://www.voyages-sncf.com . Especially according the route from/ to the airport CDG, it is recommended to take a train/ bus from/ to “Gare de Lyon”. For the way to airport Orly, it makes no difference.
From/ to CDG-airport from/ to Paris “Gare de Lyon”: Take the bus line 4, which departs every 30min (travel time 15min).

The way between Orly airport and Gare de Lyon or Bercy includes two changes: Take the metro (line 14) to “Bibliothèque François Mitterrand”, then the metro (line 10) to Pont de Rungis and afterwards the shuttle bus to the airport. How to get back from Charlieu
To: Lyon airport (80km)
The Rhonexpress connects the airport with the city centre and the train station (named Lyon Part Dieu)(every 15min, approx. 30 min travel time). See http://www.rhonexpress.fr/ .
A train connection between Roanne and Lyon (Part Dieu) exists (hourly, approx. 1h20). See http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ . The way between Charlieu and Roanne can be taken by bus, 2 lines (“ligne” 208 and 214) serve the route between the towns, taking between 40-50min with regular departures from mon-fri (less on saturday and sunday). See http://www.loire.fr/jcms/lw_886668/horaires . SNCF offers additional buses (autocars) from the station “Puilly-sous-Charlieu”, close to Charlieu. See http://www.voyages-sncf.com/
